Sleep routines

How sleep develops

Sleep is development, not a given – and every child has their own pace. 0-3 months: no rhythm yet, every 2-3 hours. 3-6 months: first longer night stretches of 4-6 hours. 6-12 months: sleeping through up to 6 hours becomes possible. 1-2 years: 11-14 hours in total. If your child sleeps differently, that is usually completely normal.

A loving bedtime ritual

Children love repetition – it brings security. A fixed, calm order helps with letting go: warm bath, a drink, pyjamas, a story, a song, lights out. As much as possible at the same time. The ritual may be short; it is about reliability, not length.

A calm sleep space

Around 16-18 °C, darkened windows and perhaps a soft, even sound feel pleasant. Until the first birthday please no loose bedding, no pillows or soft toys in the bed – it lowers the risk and gives you peace of mind.

Comforting night waking

Up to about 6 months, night feeds are completely normal and important. After that you may gently stretch the intervals. Stay calm: little light, no playing, just be there briefly and soothe. Your child learns that night is for sleeping – and that you are near.

Sleep help without pressure

There is no single right way. Some families extend intervals in small steps, others gently accompany falling asleep. More important than the method is that it fits you and feels right. Consistency helps – but lovingly, not strictly.

You need sleep too

Lack of sleep wears on your patience, your mood, your strength. That is human. Take turns with your partner if you can, accept help and rest when your child rests. You do not have to get through this phase heroically alone. It does pass – truly.
