Siblings - conflict and harmony

2–10 years · 6 chapters

Rivalry is part of it

Sibling conflict is normal and even valuable – here children practise conflict, fairness and reconciliation. You do not have to prevent every squabble. Your task is not to be judge but a model of fair togetherness and a safe harbour when waves run high.

A new sibling

A baby completely changes the older child world. Some jealousy is healthy, not ill will. Keep giving the older child exclusive time, let them help in small ways and often say that your love is not divided but grows. Setbacks like baby talk again are normal.

Avoiding comparisons

Why can you not do it like your sister hurts deeply and fuels rivalry. Every child wants to be seen for who they are, not measured against another. Speak about what you see in this child right now and celebrate their own steps – not the comparison.

Mediating in conflict

Instead of giving a solution at once, help the children find one themselves. Describe what you see, let both sides speak and ask: What might help? This way they learn to argue and reconcile – skills that carry for life. Step in only when someone is hurt.

Space for each child

Siblings need both shared and own things. Provide small islands where they have their own things, their own time, their own quiet. The right to sometimes not share is important too. Clear, fair agreements prevent many conflicts.

Strengthening the children bond

Sibling love grows through shared good experiences. Create moments where they experience something as a team – a game, an outing, a shared secret. Remind them that they have each other. This bond is one of the greatest gifts you can foster.
