Self-care for parents

All ages · 6 chapters

You count too

Parenting gives endlessly and drains at the same time. Caring for yourself is no luxury and no selfishness, but the basis for being there for your child. An empty battery can charge no one.

Small breaks are allowed

They needn't be big time-outs. A few conscious breaths, a cup of tea in peace, a short walk in fresh air help recharge in between. Plan these mini islands deliberately; they are no withdrawal from the child.

Accepting help is strength

No one has to manage everything alone. Ask for support, share tasks, accept offers. A net of family, friends or other parents relieves enormously. Asking for help is no failure but wise and human.

Let go of perfection

There are no perfect parents, and children don't need them either. Good enough really is good enough. Comparisons, especially with polished images on social media, harm more than they help. Be as lenient with yourself as with your child.

Tend the couple relationship

If there is a partnership, it easily falls behind in everyday parenting. Small shared moments, honest talks and mutual relief carry the family. The parents' relationship too is a foundation for the child.

When help matters

Persistent exhaustion, low mood, irritability or the feeling of not being able to go on are signals to take seriously, especially after birth. Talk to trusted people and don't hesitate to seek medical or psychological help.
