Preventing accidents & first aid

0–6 years · 6 chapters
Every child is their own person, with their own pace and needs. These tips and guides are general suggestions that may or may not fit your child. They are no substitute for medical, psychological or educational advice. Trust your instincts and seek professional support if you have any concerns.

Prevention is the best protection

Most child accidents happen at home and are preventable. Secured sockets, stair guards, small parts and cleaning agents put away, secured furniture and hot water out of reach prevent the most common injuries.

Know the biggest dangers

Falls, burns, drowning, poisoning and choking on small parts are the most common serious accidents. Never leave water, even a little, unsupervised, don't put hot drinks near children, keep small parts off the floor.

Stay calm in an emergency

In a real emergency, breathe deeply first. Get an overview and speak calmly to the child – your calm carries over. Know the emergency number and note it visibly. A first-aid course for child emergencies gives enormous security.

Treating minor injuries

Clean and protect grazes, cool bumps, remove splinters carefully. Comfort and attention are often half the healing. A well-stocked first-aid kit at home and on the go is basic equipment for every family.

When to get help immediately

With unconsciousness, breathing problems, heavy blood loss, suspected poisoning, larger burns, a fall from height or head injuries with abnormalities, call the emergency number at once. When in doubt, always call.

Important note

This guide does not replace a first-aid course. We strongly recommend a course for child emergencies. Emergency numbers differ by country, note the one valid for you.
