Motor development

0–2 years · 6 chapters

Step by step into movement

Every child discovers their body at their own pace. 2 months: lifting the head. 4 months: rolling. 6 months: sitting with support. 8-10 months: crawling. 11-14 months: first steps. 18 months: climbing stairs. The range is wide and completely normal – some never crawl and still learn to walk.

Practising tummy time lovingly

Tummy time strengthens neck, back and shoulders. Start from the first week with short one to two minutes, several times a day, and increase slowly. Make it a nice shared time – at eye level, with a smile. Always stay close and never leave your baby alone on their tummy.

Learning to walk naturally

Your child needs no walking aids – they can even slow development. It learns best barefoot, feeling the floor. Shoes are only needed once they walk outside. And small falls are part of it; they are part of learning, not failure.

Grasping, stacking, exploring

Let your child touch different shapes and surfaces. Shaking, fitting, stacking train fine motor skills. From about 8 months non-toxic finger paints bring joy. You do not have to force anything – curiosity is the best motor.

Giving room to move

Movement needs space and opportunity. A safe corner on the floor is worth more than any expensive play arch. Let your child climb, shuffle and try things as far as it is safe. Resist the urge to help at once – sometimes watching is the greatest gift.

When you may ask

Trust your feeling. Have it gently checked if your child does not hold their head at all by 4 months, shows no interest in moving by about 10 months or clearly uses one side of the body much less. Early support works – and one question too many is better than one too few.
