Comforting when words are not enough

0–6 years · 6 chapters

Closeness speaks without words

Small children often do not yet understand what you say, but they feel how you say it. Your closeness, your calm voice and your warmth comfort more than any explanation. Sometimes simply being there is the greatest comfort.

Let the body speak

Holding in the arms, gentle rocking or a hand on the back calm the child's nervous system. Body contact sends the signal: you are safe. Trust that your body often says more than words.

Do not talk feelings away

You do not have to fix your child's sorrow right away. It is enough to bear it and feel with it, instead of quickly distracting or playing it down. An honest you are sad, I am here comforts more than it is not so bad.

Pass on your own calm

Children catch our feelings, in good times and hard ones. The calmer you stay, the sooner your child finds calm too. Your slow breath can show the upset child the way back.

Allow time

Comfort does not work at the push of a button. Sometimes a child needs some minutes in your arms until the tension eases. Stay patient with it. Do not push for the crying to stop quickly, but accompany it to the end.

Listen to your own child

Every child wants to be comforted differently, some need firm holding, others a little space. Learn over time to read your child's signals. What calms your child they show you, when you stay attentive.
